Refunds and Cancellation
First drafted in 2025. Updated and in force from 6 August 2026. Governed by Norwegian law. Revision history
In plain language
You have 14 days to change your mind. The only part we cannot give back is the registration fee already paid to Norid, currently $9 of the $89, because the registry keeps it. Cancelling is one email, costs nothing, and stops all future charges. Full detail is below, and the Terms of Service sits alongside it.
How the billing works
The service is a yearly subscription. You pay $89 today, and $89 again every 12 months, automatically, until you cancel it. We send a reminder by email before each renewal so a charge never arrives out of nowhere.
Payments are taken by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
Your 14 day right to change your mind
If you bought as a private individual, Norwegian and EU distance selling rules give you 14 days to withdraw from the contract. You do not need a reason. We apply the same 14 days to business customers too, even though the law does not require it, because splitting hairs over who counts as a consumer is not a good way to treat people.
There is one honest catch. We register the domain straight away rather than making you wait out the 14 days, because waiting would defeat the point of the service. That means part of your money is already spent the moment the domain is registered. Norid takes the registration fee and does not return it to anyone, us included.
Withdraw within 14 days and you get $80 back of the $89. The remaining $9 is the registration paid to the registry, and it is not recoverable. If we have not yet registered the domain when you write to us, you get the full $89 back.
Refunds on a renewal charge
Renewal charges follow the same rule. Write to us within 14 days of the charge and:
- If we have not yet renewed the domain with Norid, you get the full $89 back and the domain runs to the end of the year you already paid for.
- If the renewal has already gone through to the registry, you get $80back and keep the extra year you have now paid for.
After 14 days we do not refund the current year. You keep the service for the full period you paid for, and cancelling stops everything after that.
How to cancel
Email contact@norwaydomain.no and say you want to cancel. That is the whole process. No phone call, no retention script, no form buried three clicks deep.
There is no cancellation fee and no notice period for stopping future renewals. Cancel the day after you order if you like. Your domain stays live until the end of the period you have paid for, and then it is released back to Norid.
One thing worth knowing before you cancel: once the domain is released it goes back into the general pool and anyone can take it. If you want to keep the name but move it elsewhere, tell us that instead and we will arrange a transfer rather than a release.
When we will not refund
Being straight with you about the edges of this:
- After 14 days from a charge, the period you paid for is not refundable. You keep the service until it runs out.
- If the service is terminated because the domain was used for something unlawful, no refund is due. That is set out in the Terms of Service and on the order form.
- The registration fee paid to Norid is never recoverable once the domain is registered, because the registry does not return it.
If you already paid someone else for the domain
This comes up often enough to deserve its own section. Some people buy a .no domain through a registrar abroad, pay for it, and then discover it cannot be activated because there is no Norwegian entity behind it. The money is spent and the domain sits there doing nothing.
If that is you, order in the ordinary way and select the option to register the domain yourself. We send the Norwegian holder details to enter at your registrar and approve the registration once your payment is settled. The price is the standard annual fee. Amounts paid to another registrar are a matter between you and that registrar and are not credited against our fee.
How long a refund takes
- We reply
- Within one business day
- We process the refund
- Within 5 business days of agreeing it
- Money reaches your card
- Usually 5 to 10 business days after that, depending on your bank
- Refund method
- Back to the same card, through Stripe. We cannot send it anywhere else.
Before you call your bank
If a charge looks wrong to you, please write to us first. A chargeback takes months, costs us a fee whether or not it succeeds, and freezes the domain while it runs. An email usually sorts the same problem inside a day.
If we cannot agree, you are of course free to take it further. Consumers in Norway can bring a complaint to Forbrukertilsynet or the relevant complaints board.
If any part of this is unclear, ask before you order rather than after. Write to contact@norwaydomain.no or use the contact page, and we will explain any clause in plain words within one business day.
